More than 50 young singers will take the Orinda Theatre stage Sunday, Aug. 16, when the Lamorinda Idol Finals cap a summer of auditions with a daylong, free competition open to the public.

That's just the start of a packed stretch of community events running through mid-September across Orinda, Moraga and Lafayette, according to the Lamorinda Weekly community calendar.

Lamorinda Idol Finals, Sunday, Aug. 16

The Lamorinda Arts Council's signature youth singing competition fills the Orinda Theatre (4 Orinda Theatre Square) with four divisions: K–5 soloists from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., groups from 1:30 to 3 p.m., middle school soloists from 3:45 to 5:30 p.m. and high school soloists from 6 to 8 p.m.

Admission is free.

The council launched the program in 2006 as Orinda Idol and renamed it Lamorinda Idol in 2013 after expanding to serve all three cities. Contact the Lamorinda Arts Council at (925) 359-9940 for details.

Moraga Commons concerts wind down

As we reported in July, the free Thursday concert series at the Moraga Commons Band Shell wraps up with two final shows. The series is run by the Moraga Parks and Recreation Department under director Mackenzie Brady.

Thursday, Aug. 13, brings Dream Like Taylor/Cassie B, a Taylor Swift tribute act with Top 40 hits, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The season closer on Thursday, Aug. 20, features Fleetwood Mask (Fleetwood Mac tribute) at the same time.

Loard's Ice Cream serves from the lawn at every show, the Moraga Lions Club and Moraga Kiwanis Club pour beer and wine, and Taste of the World Market and Ofie's Kitchen food trucks round out the options.

Kapnek Trust USA Fun Run, Sunday, Aug. 30

Runners, walkers, strollers and dogs are all welcome at the Kapnek Trust USA Family Fun 5K Run, 1K Kids Run/Walk and Carnival, 9 a.m. to noon at Moraga Commons Park (1425 St. Marys Rd.). Every participant gets a commemorative T-shirt.

Beyond the race, the morning includes a healthy brunch, carnival games, a rock wall, a jumpy house, arts and crafts, live music by the Chinayakare Ensemble (an Oakland-based Zimbabwean music and dance group) and prizes for the top three finishers. All proceeds support preschool education, nutrition and AIDS prevention programs for children in Zimbabwe. The nonprofit has refurbished more than 220 preschools and serves roughly 15,000 children per year across 12 Zimbabwean districts.

Lafayette Art & Wine Festival, Sept. 19–20

Downtown Lafayette's biggest annual street festival returns Saturday, Sept. 19 (10 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and Sunday, Sept. 20 (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) with more than 200 artist and craft booths, four stages hosting 20-plus bands, four kid zones, California wines and craft beers. Admission is free.

Free parking is available in the BART Lafayette Station lots, with a free shuttle to the festival grounds. A complimentary bike valet operates at 81 Lafayette Circle. The full music schedule is at lafayettefestival.com.
