True freshman Will Hardy earned his first collegiate start as Saint Mary's men's golf heads to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, for the CDA National Reserve Invitational beginning Monday, Sept. 21.
Head coach Scott Hardy made one lineup change for the tournament, according to the team's preview. Will Hardy earned the spot after competing as an individual at the season opener in Michigan and posting a strong qualifying week.
The Gaels carry momentum from a tie for fourth place at the Island Resort Intercollegiate at Sage Run Golf Club on Sept. 7. That marked the fourth straight year Saint Mary's competed at the event and the fourth consecutive top-five finish.
Redshirt sophomore Sam Baumuller, from Los Gatos, led the way in Michigan. He opened with rounds of 66 and 67 to share the tournament lead at 11-under par after two rounds. An even-par final round left him tied for third, his best collegiate finish and a tie of his career-low tournament score set at the same event in 2025.
The final round in Michigan was a team highlight. Saint Mary's posted a tournament-low seven-under-par round. Inigo Izuzquiza shot 69, Central Michigan transfer Hudson Vedder carded 70, and Trey Tuyo and Landon Abalateo each finished at one-under 71.
The CDA National Reserve Invitational features 36 holes Monday and 18 holes Tuesday on the 7,254-yard, par-72 course. Teams use a 5-counts-4 scoring format, meaning each squad's best four of five individual scores count toward the team total. The 16-team field includes Oregon State, Washington State, Boise State, Fresno State, Sacramento State, San Francisco, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, Hawaii, Pacific, North Texas, Seattle U, Idaho and Tarleton State. Eastern Washington is the host.
Saint Mary's last competed in Idaho in 2018. The program added this tournament to its fall schedule for the first time this season, coming off its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2019, according to the team's schedule announcement.
The starting five for the Gaels: Baumuller, Izuzquiza, Abalateo, Will Hardy and Tuyo. Vedder will compete as an individual.
Saint Mary's next plays the Visit Stockton Invitational on Oct. 12, followed by the Saint Mary's Invitational at Bayonet Golf Course on Oct. 19.
