Saint Mary's baseball will retire Tony Gonsolin's No. 15 jersey at its preseason banquet on Friday, Jan. 29, 2027, the program announced Wednesday, Sept. 9. His number will become the fifth on the left field wall in Moraga.
Gonsolin joins Tom Candiotti (No. 49), Mark Teahen (No. 10), Corbin Burnes (No. 16) and Dr. Miles McAfee (No. 11) among the program's retired numbers.
"We could not be more proud and honored to retire Tony's number 15 jersey and solidify him as one of the all-time Gaels," head coach Eric Valenzuela said in the announcement. "Tony has been a staple for our program not just as a player but also as an alum … He was not only a standout player for us but has also become a dear friend and we can't wait to celebrate him at this year's banquet."
The Vacaville native played four seasons as a two-way player for the Gaels, both hitting and pitching. He finished his collegiate career with a .305 batting average and 204 hits across 192 games. He is tied with Von Hayes for the program record with 17 career triples and ranks fourth all-time with 13 saves.
On the mound, Gonsolin made 53 appearances as a reliever and closer. He led the team in saves in back-to-back seasons, posting a career-high seven in 2015.
In his senior season of 2016, Gonsolin batted .307 with a .400 on-base percentage and a career-high 65 hits, earning All-WCC First Team honors. He helped the Gaels win their first West Coast Conference Tournament Championship and reach the NCAA Regional for the first time.
The Los Angeles Dodgers drafted Gonsolin in the ninth round of the 2016 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut on June 26, 2019, according to his MLB player profile.
His breakout came in 2022, when he went 16-1 with a 2.14 ERA across 24 starts, striking out 119 batters with a 0.87 WHIP. He earned his first National League All-Star selection that season. Gonsolin also made two starts in the Dodgers' 2020 World Series victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Gonsolin signed with the Kansas City Royals as a free agent in August 2026 after being designated for assignment by the Dodgers in November 2025.
The Jan. 29 ceremony will take place at the Soda Center on the Saint Mary's campus. Ticket and banquet details have not yet been released.
