Paul Magu-Lecugy opened Rêve Bistro on Moraga Road in January 2016 with a dream of bringing a Parisian neighborhood bistro to Lafayette. The restaurant turned 10 earlier this year, and the milestone comes with six consecutive years of Michelin Guide recognition and a loyal following that has made it one of the East Bay's most decorated French restaurants.
Magu-Lecugy's path to Lafayette was anything but typical. Born in Nigeria and adopted at age 2 by Parisian diplomats, he grew up partly in Africa before his family returned to Paris when he was a teenager. He trained at the prestigious Ferrandi Paris culinary school, then cooked under Alain Ducasse and two-Michelin-star chef Gérard Besson before crossing the Atlantic around 2000 to join chef Sylvain Portay's team at the Ritz-Carlton San Francisco.
That's where he met Laura Magu-Lecugy, who was working in banquets and hospitality. She grew up in Concord and had spent more than 25 years at the Ritz-Carlton. The couple married, moved to the East Bay to raise their three daughters, and in 2015 Paul left his executive sous chef position at the St. Regis San Francisco. After months searching for the right space, they found the spot at 960 Moraga Road, Suite F.
"We loved the garden and the closeness to downtown and the neighborhoods," Magu-Lecugy told Diablo Magazine in a profile published July 17.
The family business is exactly that. All three Magu-Lecugy daughters work at the restaurant: Coco, the middle child, has been cooking alongside her father since she was 12, while Vivienne and Audrey handle the front of the house. Laura runs marketing and PR and joined the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce board of directors in 2025. Lead server Sophie Letort, originally from Normandy, has been on staff since opening day.
The accolades have stacked up. Rêve has been a Michelin Guide Recommended restaurant every year from 2021 through 2026. Diablo Magazine named Magu-Lecugy Best Chef in 2025 and gave the restaurant Best Special Occasion Restaurant and Best Outdoor Dining honors the same year. The East Bay Times readers voted it Best French Restaurant in the East Bay from 2018 through 2024.
Guests enter through a metal gate into a patio strung with lights and greenery. Inside, the dining room features exposed brick, large tile floors, sparkling chandeliers, and a sleek bar. The menu spans French classics with seasonal changes, and Master Sommelier Chris Gaither, whose résumé includes The French Laundry and Restaurant Gary Danko, curates a predominantly French wine list.
Looking ahead, Magu-Lecugy said he wants to deepen the restaurant's ties to local Francophiles. Rêve has launched a monthly French conversation lunch group and is running a Summer in Provence pop-up on Fridays and Saturdays when the restaurant is open, featuring a three-course prix fixe of salad, steak frites, and profiteroles for $49 per person, with lunch seating from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Rêve Bistro will close for summer vacation July 20 through August 4 and reopen August 5. Regular dinner hours are Tuesday through Thursday, 5–8 p.m., and Friday through Saturday, 5–8:30 p.m. Reservations at revebistro.com or OpenTable.
