Orinda residents can climb inside a BearCat armored vehicle, watch a live drone demonstration, and try the "Dunk the Chief" dunk tank at National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 28 Orinda Way.
The free event runs from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Orinda Community Center Park, hosted by the Orinda Police Department with the Moraga-Orinda Fire District.
National Night Out is a nationwide community-policing event held the first Tuesday of August in thousands of communities across all 50 states. Orinda's version packs in hands-on activities that get neighbors talking to each other and to the first responders who serve them.
What to expect
The lineup includes:
- BearCat armored vehicle tours
- A breaching door skills challenge
- "Dunk the Chief" dunk tank
- A drone demonstration
- Police vs. Fire competitions, starting at 5 p.m.
The Police vs. Fire games pit Orinda PD against Moraga-Orinda Fire District crews in head-to-head contests. The Orinda Police Department promoted the matchup in a video on its Facebook page with the tagline "Well, that escalated quickly."
Getting there
The event is at 28 Orinda Way, the same park that hosts the Thursday Nights in Orinda summer concert series. Admission is free.
No registration is required, according to the city's announcement. The City of Orinda published the event details on Monday, Aug. 3.
