Orinda Books celebrates its 50th birthday Saturday, Aug. 22, with an all-day party at its Village Square shop featuring a 20% storewide discount, cupcakes, a children's scavenger hunt and a raffle.

The store opened in 1976 at 276 Village Square and has anchored Orinda's small downtown ever since. It hasn't moved. Over five decades, the shop has hosted monthly book clubs, author talks and partnerships with local schools and nonprofits to promote literacy. The store bills itself as Contra Costa County's largest independent bookstore.

For the anniversary, every in-store purchase (excluding artwork) is 20% off, including current bestsellers. Each transaction also earns an entry into a raffle for a $50 gift certificate. Customers who spend at least $50 in one visit get to spin a prize wheel. Kids can join a scavenger hunt through the shelves for a chance to win from a prize jar.

Rajiv Doshi wrote in the Lamorinda Life newsletter on Tuesday that the milestone is "the kind of milestone that says a lot about a community," urging neighbors to stop in and show the store some love.

The store is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. More details are on the Orinda Books website.
