The Moraga-Orinda Fire District board is scheduled to interview three candidates Thursday, Oct. 8, for a vacant seat on the board overseeing fire and emergency services across Orinda and Moraga.
Greg Andrews, James Duff and Max Sherman are vying for the District 2 position at a special meeting scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Orinda Library Auditorium, 26 Orinda Way. The board could appoint a new director that same evening, according to the meeting agenda.
The seat opened after Director John Jex resigned effective Aug. 30. His term was scheduled to run through Dec. 1, 2028, according to the district’s vacancy notice.
Three affirmative votes are needed to appoint a candidate, under the process outlined in the agenda.
If no one reaches that threshold, the board could direct staff to reopen applications or use additional meeting dates for interviews and votes. The vacancy notice lists Oct. 14, 21 and 27 as possible additional interview dates.
The appointment comes during a period of broader turnover for the five-member board. Districts 1, 3 and 4 are on the Nov. 3 ballot, The Orinda News reported Aug. 26. Director Steve Danziger is not seeking re-election in District 3, and incumbent Mike Roemer faces a challenger in District 4.
The Oct. 8 meeting will be streamed on the MOFD YouTube channel, according to the agenda. Residents can also join by Zoom or phone at 669-900-6833, using webinar ID 858 9210 9762.
Written public comments must be submitted to [email protected] by 2 p.m. Oct. 8 to be distributed to the board before the meeting. Later submissions will be distributed and posted the following day. Written comments will not be read aloud.
Public comment is limited to three minutes per speaker per agenda item.
