The Moraga-Orinda Fire District is looking for its next board member, and residents of District 2 have less than two weeks to apply.

The district posted a notice of vacancy on Aug. 21 after Director John Jex resigned from the District 2 seat he held as second vice president. His term was not set to expire until Dec. 1, 2028. The vacancy takes effect Sunday, Aug. 30.

The board considered how to fill the vacancy at its Aug. 19 meeting. A notice posted two days later said the district would fill the seat by appointment under California Government Code section 1780. The board must make its final decision within 60 days, or by Oct. 29.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, registered voters and residents of District 2. They cannot have been convicted of felonies involving bribery, embezzlement of public money, extortion, perjury or related offenses. Residents unsure whether they live in the district can check using the Find Your District lookup tool at the website ca.elected.guide.

Interviews are scheduled for the evening of Thursday, Oct. 8, with additional sessions on Oct. 14, 21 and 27 if needed.

No reason was given for the resignation. In addition to his board seat, Jex served on the district's Standing Audit Committee and the Ad Hoc Committee on Joint Fire Prevention with the Town of Moraga, according to the Aug. 19 board agenda.

The MOFD board sets policy for fire prevention, suppression and emergency medical services across 42 square miles covering Moraga, Orinda and surrounding unincorporated areas including Canyon and Bollinger Canyon. The district responds to more than 3,000 incidents a year from five stations.

The Sept. 16 regular board meeting has been cancelled. The next scheduled meeting is Oct. 21.

Applications must be submitted online through the MOFD District 2 vacancy notice. Questions can be directed to Fire Chief Jeff Isaacs at (925) 258-4500 or [email protected].
