Lamorinda's Tuesday, Nov. 3 ballot is set, with contested council races in Orinda and Moraga and a $168 parcel tax for Acalanes high schools.

The candidate filing period has closed, locking in the full slate, the Lamorinda Weekly reported. Lafayette will skip a council election because the number of nominees matched the number of open seats.

Orinda and Moraga council races

In Orinda, four candidates are competing for three council seats. Mayor Brandyn Iverson, Vice Mayor Latika Malkani and Council Member Janet Riley are all seeking reelection. Juana Rudate, who describes herself as a physicist and mother, is the lone challenger.

Moraga's race is tighter. Mayor Kerry Hillis and Council Member Steve Woehleke face two challengers for two seats: Planning Commission member Alexis Mapel and former Park Commissioner Bill Carman.

Measure W: $168 parcel tax for AUHSD

The biggest districtwide question is Measure W, a proposed $168-per-parcel annual tax for the Acalanes Union High School District (AUHSD). The district serves Miramonte, Campolindo and Acalanes high schools. Passage requires a two-thirds supermajority.

AUHSD trustees voted unanimously Aug. 5 to place the eight-year tax on the ballot, according to The Orinda News. The district's previous attempt, Measure T, failed in May 2025 with 63.63% support, The Orinda News reported, falling just short of the threshold.

If approved, the tax would bring AUHSD's total annual parcel-tax bill to $469, adding to $189 from Measure G and $112 from Measure A. The district projects a $1.5 million budget deficit for 2026–27 and has cut about $2 million in spending over the past two years.

"There's no guarantee," trustee Paul Chopra said at the Aug. 5 board meeting, as reported by The Orinda News. "We'll just have to work as hard as we can to get more and more messages out to the community."

School boards and AUHSD trustees

The Orinda Union School District has a contested race: four candidates for three seats. Incumbents Edda Collins Coleman and Board President Katie Shogan are running alongside challengers John Chabalko and Chloe Aftel. Incumbent Eve Phillips is not seeking reelection.

According to the Lamorinda Weekly, as of the filing deadline, only two candidates had filed for three Moraga School District board seats: incumbents Larry Jacobs and Martha White. In Lafayette, incumbents Katy Foreman and Rob Strum are the only filers for three open positions.

AUHSD also has trustee elections under a new area-based plan adopted Oct. 15, 2025. In Area 1, incumbent Stacey Schweppe faces challenger Nithin Iyengar. Incumbent Jennifer Chen in Area 3 and Nancy Kendzierski in Area 5 are running unopposed.

Fire district

Three Moraga-Orinda Fire District (MOFD) board seats are on the ballot. Incumbent Greg Hasler is running unopposed in District 1. In District 3, incumbent Steve Danziger stepped aside and endorsed John Donnelly, who faces Steve Cohn. In District 4, incumbent Mike Roemer is challenged by Linda Stevens.

Separately, the MOFD board is filling a District 2 vacancy left by the resignation of Director John Jex. The board accepted applications through Sept. 5 and scheduled interviews for Oct. 14, 21 and 27. The board's Aug. 19 agenda set an Oct. 29 deadline for final action on the appointment.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Moraga candidate statements will appear in materials mailed by Contra Costa County Elections.
