The Lafayette School District Governing Board took up its first formal policy on artificial intelligence at its Wednesday, Aug. 19 meeting at Stanley Middle School, placing Board Policy 0441 on the agenda for final adoption.
The AI policy, a new Weather Safety policy (BP 5141.75), a revised Safety policy (BP 5142) and an updated Facilities Master Plan policy (BP 7110) all appeared as action items after a first reading at the June 10 meeting, according to the district's meeting agenda. Official minutes confirming vote counts have not yet been published.
The agenda also called for deleting the existing Sun Safety policy (BP 5141.7). A new Weather Safety policy was adopted at the same meeting, though the agenda does not explicitly state one replaces the other.
The specific provisions of BP 0441, including what it requires of students and staff regarding AI tools, have not been made public.
In closed session, the board took up three settlement agreements: one involving an employee (identified only as Employee 3685) and two with families over special education services for individual students. Terms of all three settlements are confidential. The closed session also included anticipated-litigation items and a public employee discipline matter.
Board member Rob Sturm participated remotely via Zoom from a Courtyard Marriott in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey. President Katy Foreman and members Dave Smith, Jon Deane and Alida Smit met in person at the Stanley Middle School Library.
Other action items included approval of a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Lafayette and approval of accounts with Mechanics Bank.
The consent calendar covered more than a dozen technology contracts for the 2026-2027 school year, including GoGuardian, Newsela, Amplify and Learning A-Z, a stipend MOU with the Lafayette Education Association, and special education service agreements with providers such as The Helix School and Stepping Stones Group. Transportation contracts with First Student Inc. and ADROIT Transportation were also renewed.
