Springbrook Road near Sherwood Way in Lafayette will close to through traffic during work hours starting Thursday, Oct. 1, for a two-month culvert and sinkhole repair.

Contra Costa County Public Works announced the $527,675 project will shut the road between east of Sherwood Way and south of the work site from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, through Monday, Nov. 30. Residents along the closure can expect delays of up to 15 minutes during those hours.

Detour signs and electronic message boards will direct drivers around the work zone, according to the county's announcement.

What's being fixed

Crews from GradeTech, Inc., the contractor awarded the job on Aug. 25, will tear out a damaged 36-inch corrugated metal pipe beneath the road. In its place, workers will install 62 linear feet of reinforced concrete pipe and 29 linear feet of a cast-in-place box culvert measuring 4 feet by 3 feet.

The county's project page lists additional work: a new reinforced concrete drainage junction, two manholes, clearing, paving, mill and overlay, and fresh pavement striping. The project is budgeted for 40 working days. A pre-construction meeting was held Monday, Sept. 14.

How it's funded

Federal Emergency Relief funds and Local Road Funds cover the cost. The county received federal environmental clearance in October 2025 after submitting a preliminary environmental study in July 2024. The project was advertised for bids on July 21, with bids opened on Aug. 18 and the contract awarded to GradeTech a week later.

What drivers should know

The closure applies only during weekday work hours. Holidays are excluded, and work is weather-dependent. Springbrook Road is expected to reopen to normal traffic after Nov. 30, though the county notes the timeline depends on unforeseen circumstances.
