A Martinez man linked to three Lafayette home burglaries is behind bars on $220,000 bail after a multi-agency operation that spanned two days and three cities.

Lafayette police arrested Kohlton Kumnick, 34, on Wednesday, Aug. 12, in Walnut Creek after he fled a search warrant the day before, according to the department. Police described Kumnick as a serial residential burglary suspect.

The three burglaries struck Lafayette homes the week of Aug. 11. Detectives identified Kumnick as the suspect in all three cases and went to a home on the 3800 block of Alhambra Way in Martinez on Tuesday, Aug. 11, to serve a search warrant. Kumnick spotted the officers and ran.

He was not located that day.

Police recovered property stolen in the Lafayette burglaries inside the Martinez home during the warrant search. Four agencies joined Lafayette PD in pursuing Kumnick: the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office, Walnut Creek Police Department, Martinez PD and East Bay Regional Park Police.

The next morning, Lafayette detectives and the Sheriff's Office special enforcement unit known as the J-Team caught up with Kumnick in Walnut Creek. He was behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle when they took him into custody.

Kumnick was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on suspicion of burglary, vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, felon in possession of a firearm, grand theft, identity theft, resisting arrest and narcotics offenses. The felon-in-possession charge indicates a prior felony conviction, though Lafayette police did not specify the nature of that record.

He is being held on $220,000 bail. No arraignment date has been announced.
