The League of Women Voters of Diablo Valley will co-host a free session on voting rights on Sunday, August 9, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Oak Room on the second floor of the Walnut Creek Library.
The event, titled "Unite and Rise for Voting Rights — Day of Action," will cover how recent election law changes may affect voters, feature personal stories about voting's community impact, and offer Get Out the Vote activities, according to the Moraga Citizens Network, which posted the listing on Sunday, July 19.
The LWVDV is a nonpartisan organization headquartered at 500 St. Mary's Road in Lafayette. Its service area includes Moraga, Orinda, Lafayette and more than 20 other Contra Costa County communities.
The chapter is partnering on the August 9 session with the National Council of Negro Women, Alameda Section, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's Omega Upsilon Omega Chapter, according to the LWVDV event page.
National context
The Walnut Creek gathering is tied to a nationwide League of Women Voters "Day of Action" organized for Saturday, August 8, with hundreds of local events across the country. The Diablo Valley chapter scheduled its session for Sunday, August 9, one day after the national anchor date. The national effort is part of the League's "Unite and Rise 8.5" initiative, which aims to engage 8.5 million voters before the November 2026 midterm elections, according to a July 1 LWV press release.
The push comes after two significant federal court actions this year. In April 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court weakened Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, a provision used to challenge discriminatory voting laws. In June, the court declined to review a ruling that ended enforcement of another Voting Rights Act provision in seven Midwestern states, according to NPR.

The LWVDV's Unite and Rise team has been planning voter engagement strategies for different demographic groups ahead of California's 2026 General Election on Tuesday, November 3, according to the chapter's May 2026 newsletter.
