Poets and visual artists will share the stage at Town Hall Theatre on Sunday, Sept. 13, when the Lamorinda Arts Council hosts a free afternoon of ekphrasis, a poetic form in which writers compose verse inspired by works of visual art.
The "Art Embraces Poetry" program runs from 2 to 4 p.m. on the theater's main stage at 3535 School St. in Lafayette. The format pairs poets reading original work with the paintings and images that sparked it, so the audience experiences both art forms side by side.
The council describes the collaboration as poets painting images with words while artists tell stories with color.
The California Writers Club Mt. Diablo Branch is co-promoting the event and issued a call for submissions on Aug. 5. Artists faced an Aug. 14 deadline to submit 2D images, and poets had until Aug. 17 to request the original art they would write about.
A shift from the regular series
The Art Embraces Poetry program has historically run on select Saturdays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Town Hall Theatre. The Sept. 13 edition moves to a Sunday and runs 30 minutes longer than the series' usual Saturday format.
